What to Expect During Your Maternity Session

If you've never had professional maternity photos taken before, it's completely normal to have questions.  In fact, one of the most common things I hear from expecting mothers is:

"I've never done anything like this before. What should I expect?"

Whether you're excited, nervous, or somewhere in between, my goal is to make your maternity session feel relaxed, enjoyable, and completely stress-free. If you're considering maternity photos and wondering what happens during a session, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know.

Before Your Session
Once your maternity session is booked, I'll guide you through the planning process, so you don't have to figure everything out on your own.

We'll discuss:

  • Your vision for the session

  • Preferred wardrobe options

  • Which gowns you'd like to wear from my client closet

  • Whether you'd like to include your spouse or children

  • Styling suggestions and preparation tips

My goal is to make sure you feel prepared and confident before you step into the studio.

What Should I Wear?
One of the biggest concerns moms have is deciding what to wear. The good news is that I offer a curated client wardrobe featuring maternity gowns designed specifically for photography. These pieces are chosen to flatter a growing bump and photograph beautifully.

If you'd prefer to wear your own outfit, I'm happy to help you select something that fits your vision and complements the style of the session. The most important thing is that you feel comfortable and beautiful.

Will My Husband or Children Be Included?
Absolutely.

Many mothers choose to include their partner, children, or both in a portion of the session. These images often become some of the most meaningful photographs because they capture the excitement and connection of your growing family.

We'll create a variety of images together before focusing on individual portraits of you and your baby bump.

What If I Don't Know How to Pose?
This is probably the biggest fear most women have. The answer is simple:

You don't need to know how to pose. That's my job. Throughout your session, I will guide you every step of the way with simple directions and natural movements that feel comfortable and flattering. From hand placement to body positioning, I'll show you exactly what to do.

Most clients arrive feeling nervous and leave saying, "That was so much easier than I expected."

What If I Feel Awkward?
You're not alone. Many women feel nervous at the beginning of their session, especially if they haven't been professionally photographed before. The first few minutes are simply about getting comfortable.

As we work together, you'll relax into the experience and begin focusing less on the camera and more on enjoying the moment. My studio is designed to be a calm, welcoming space where you can slow down and celebrate this season of motherhood.

How Long Does a Maternity Session Take?
Most maternity sessions last approximately 60 to 90 minutes.

This gives us plenty of time for:

  • Multiple looks

  • Gown changes

  • Family portraits

  • Individual maternity portraits

  • Creative lighting and posing

There is no need to rush. The session is intentionally designed to feel relaxed and enjoyable.

The Goal Isn't Perfection
Many mothers worry about how they look during pregnancy. They focus on swelling, weight gain, or feeling different than they did before. But maternity photography isn't about perfection. It's about preserving a season that passes far too quickly.

Years from now, you won't remember every detail of how you looked. You'll remember how it felt to be growing the child who changed your life.

A Studio Experience Designed Around You
Every maternity session is designed to be a personalized experience that celebrates your journey into motherhood. From wardrobe guidance and flattering lighting to posing and styling, every detail is carefully planned so that you can simply show up and enjoy the experience.

You don't need modeling experience. You don't need the perfect outfit. And you certainly don't need to know how to pose. You just need to arrive ready to celebrate this incredible chapter.
