Top 10 Baby Registry Items You’ll Actually Use in 2026

Preparing for a baby is exciting-but building a baby registry can quickly become overwhelming. Walk into any baby store (or start scrolling online), and suddenly it feels like your newborn needs 147 different things just to make it through the first week.

As a mom and a maternity photographer serving Murrieta, Temecula, Menifee and surrounding areas, I spend a lot of time talking with expecting and new moms. And if there’s one thing I hear again and again, its how easy it is to buy way too much baby gear.

Here’s the good news: babies actually need far less than we’re led to believe.

As a maternity and newborn photographer, I’m around new and expecting moms all the time, and one thing becomes clear pretty quickly: there are products parents swear by-and plenty of others that barely make it out of the box.

So if you’re working on your baby registry, start with the essentials. Here are 10 baby registry items you’ll actually use once your little one arrives.

  1. A Safe Place for Baby to Sleep
This one goes straight to the top of the list.

Whether you choose a crib, bassinet, or bedside sleeper, you’ll want a safe, convenient sleep space ready before baby comes home.

You don’t necessarily need the fanciest model with every available feature. Focus on a firm, flat sleep surface designed for infant sleep and keep the space simple.

Registry tip: Add extra fitted sheets. Middle of the night spit up and diaper leaks happen more often than you think!

  2. A Really Good Car Seat
A car seat isn’t just a registry item - it’s something you’ll need before you can even bring your baby home.

Depending on your lifestyle, you may prefer an infant seat that clicks into a stroller or a convertible car seat designed to grow with your child.

Whichever you choose, look for one that fits your vehicle properly and that you’ll feel comfortable using every day.

  3. A Stroller That Fits Your Lifestyle
You don’t need the biggest or most expensive stroller. You need the right stroller for you. When I had my baby, I knew I wanted something that was easy to push and enough room for baby and since I enjoyed jogging outside with baby, I went with a Bob Stroller. Again, get something that works for you!

Think about where you’ll actually use it.

Are you walking around your neighborhood every morning? Navigating stores and restaurants? Traveling frequently? Planning on having another baby relatively soon?

A stroller is one of those items you’ll potentially use for years, so its worth doing a little research before adding one to your registry.

  4. Swaddles and Sleep Sacks

Newborns love feeling snug and secure, which is why swaddles tend to become one of those things parents reach for constantly during those first few months.

Register for a few different styles rather than buying ten of the same one. Babies can be surprisingly opinionated about what they like!

As your baby grows and begins showing signs of rolling, you’ll transition away from traditional swaddling, so having appropriately sized sleep sacks ready for the next stage can also be helpful.

  5. More Burp Cloths Than You Think You Need

    Put down six burp cloths.

    Now add more.

Between feeding, spit-up, drool, milk dribbles and everything else that comes with newborn life, you’ll have these scattered throughout your house.

Keep them near your feeding area, changing station, bedroom, diaper bag and anywhere else you spend time with baby.

They’re inexpensive, practical and absolutely registry-worthy.

  6. Baby Carrier

There will inevitably come a moment when your baby wants to be help-but you also desperatley need both or your hands.

    Enter the baby carrier.

A comfortable wrap or structured carrier lets you keep baby close while walking around the house, going for a walk or simply getting a few things done.

Look for one that’s comfortable for your body and appropriate for your baby’s age and size.

  7. A Simple Baby Monitor

You don’t neccessarily need the monitor with every bell, whistle and statistic imaginable.

For many families, a dependable video monitor that lets you clearly see and hear baby is exactly what they need.

Think about your home’s layout and how you’ll use it. If baby’s room is upstairs or on the opposite side of the house, range and connections reliability may matter more to you than extra features.

  8. A Portable Changing Pad or Changing Station

Here’s something you learn very quickly after becoming a parent:

    Diaper changes happen everywhere.

While a beautiful nursery changing table is wonderful, having a portable changing mat or small diaper caddy can make everyday life much easier

Fill it with diapers, wipes, diaper cream, burp cloths and extra outfit. You can move it from the bedroom to the living room- or wherever the latest diper emergency happens.

  9. Zip-Up Pajamas

Those adorable newborn outfits with twelve tiny buttons?

    Very cute.

    At 2:47 a.m? Not quite a cute.

Register for comfortable sleepers with zippers, especially two-way zippers that make diaper changes easier.

You can absolutely have a few beautiful outfits for photos, visitors and special occasions, but for everyday newborn life, comfortable sleepers are hard to beat.

And don’t go overboard buying newborn sizes. Some babies fit them for weeks, while others seem to skp them almost entirely.

  10. A Keepsake Baby Book or Photo Album

This might not feel like an “essential” when you’re comparing bottle warmers and diaper pails, but its one item you may appreciate more with every passing year.

The newborn stage is unbelievably fleeing.

Tiny fingers. Wrinkled toes. Hospital bracelets. First yawns. The way your baby curls into your chest.

At the time, you think you’ll remember every detail.

But life gets busy, and those tiny details begin to fade.

Add a beautiful baby book, keepsake box or heirloom photo album to your registry so you have somehwere to preserve the pieces of your baby’s story that you never want to forget.

What You DON’T Need to Put on Your Registry
Here’s something expecting parents don’t hear enough:

You don’t need everything before your baby arrives.

You don’t need an entire closet of newborn clothes.

And you don’t have to create the “perfect” nusery before bringing your baby home.

Every baby is different. Something one parent considers an absolute necessity may be something another baby refuses to use.

Start with the essentials and add things once you learn what works for your family.

While You’re Preparing for Baby, Don’t Forget About You
There’s so much focus on preparing for the baby during pregnancy that its easy for moms to forget something important:

This is your story too.

Your body is doing something extraordinary, and this chapter deserves to be documented. If you’re considering maternity portraits, start planning your session before your thrid trimester gets too far along. For many expecting moms, approximately 28-34 weeks is a beautiful time for maternity photographs because your belly is well-defined while you’re often still comfortable enough to enjoy the experience.

From Preparing the Nursery to Preserving the Memories.
The funny thing about baby gear is that the things that seem so important right now wont be around forever. The bassinet gets packed away. The newborn sleepers become impossibly tiny. The stroller eventually disappears from the garage. And somehow, that little baby grows up. The photographs are different.

They’re on of the few things from this chapter that can become more valuable to you as the years pass.

At Head2Tho Photography, I create elegant, editorial-inspired studio maternity portraits for expecting mothers throughout Murrieta, Temecula, Riverside, Menifee and surrounding Southern California communities.

My goal is to give you more than beautiful photographs. I want you to have a experience where you can slow down, feel beautiful and celebrate the woman you are during this incredible season of motherhood.
